How an Australian operator is using the KITE long-range fixed-wing drone across Romania, halving patient wait times and building Europe’s largest commercial drone logistics network.
Diagnostic delays: the logistics constraint.
In western Romania, a patient presenting at a regional clinic for a routine blood panel faces a two-to-three-day wait for results. Following collection, specimens are consolidated by a ground courier, loaded alongside other samples, and transported by road to the nearest MedLife laboratory. For routine diagnostics, that delay is an inconvenience. For time-sensitive pathology, it represents a closed window for early intervention.
The constraint is not laboratory capacity. It is the supply chain connecting the point of collection to the point of analysis. Across Romania’s regional network, hundreds of kilometres from major metropolitan centres, road-based specimen transport is slow, cost-intensive, and structurally difficult to scale. MedLife, Romania’s largest private medical services provider, identified this as the primary logistics bottleneck limiting diagnostic performance across its regional footprint.
The solution was aerial. MedLife partnered with Skyy Network, an Australian drone operator specialising in complex beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations. Skyy Network deployed the KITE fixed-wing uncrewed aerial system (UAS), powered by AXIOM, as the operational platform. That deployment now underpins the largest commercial medical drone delivery network operating in Europe.
Building a drone network from the ground up.
The impetus for the programme came from within MedLife itself. A company-wide innovation initiative had identified drone logistics as a high-potential lever for reducing operational costs, a significant share of which were attributable to dedicated ground transport for pathology specimens. The business case was clear. Execution was another matter.
Two of Skyy Network’s co-founders are Romanian, a factor that accelerated the initial relationship and gave the team credibility on the ground. A proof-of-concept was proposed, scoped, and accepted. Skyy Network’s CEO travelled to Oradea expecting an eight-week deployment. He stayed four months.
Establishing Romania’s first commercial BVLOS drone operations required Skyy Network to design a concept of operations with no local precedent, engage regulators working from frameworks still being developed, recruit and train a local pilot workforce, and build public confidence in a programme without parallel in the country. Every element, from airspace integration to community engagement, had to be constructed from first principles.

800 kilometres of approved routes, building Europe’s longest medical drone flight.
Skyy Network currently operates close to 800 kilometres of approved drone routes across western Romania, forming the largest commercial medical drone logistics network in Europe. The network transports pathology specimens between regional collection points and MedLife’s laboratories in Oradea and Arad, replacing ground transport across a corridor where road-based logistics had been the only available option.
The centrepiece of the network is the 120-kilometre Oradea-to-Arad corridor. At launch, this represented the longest medical specimen drone flight recorded in Europe. No other commercial drone platform in the medical logistics sector has matched this range while remaining within the critical 25-kilogram regulatory weight threshold, the boundary that governs operational approvals across most European jurisdictions.
That capability is a direct function of platform selection. The KITE fixed-wing UAS, together with AXIOM, combines the range and payload characteristics required for long-corridor medical logistics with the software intelligence needed to operate safely at scale. The two are not separable: airframe range without operational management capability does not produce a network.
At remote collection points, MedLife clinical staff with no aviation background receive the aircraft, power it down, swap Battery Pods, and load or extract pathology specimens before preparing the drone for its return leg. The ground interaction is designed to be intuitive, safe, and time-efficient, placing no operational burden on clinical teams.
The platform: why KITE and AXIOM.
Skyy Network operates as a hardware-agnostic operator, selecting aircraft on the basis of mission requirements rather than vendor relationships. For the Romania programme, two capabilities determined the selection of KITE and AXIOM: range-to-payload performance, and usability by design.

AXIOM: compliance and scale, built in.
Skyy Network operates under the EASA and JARUS Specific Operational Risk Assessment (SORA) frameworks. Pilots use AXIOM as their flight planning and operational management interface, with the SORA compliance workflow embedded directly into the platform, reducing the time and cost of route planning, regulatory submission, and compliance demonstration.

Measured outcomes and the path to national scale.
The network is delivering a 50% reduction in patient result turnaround times. A patient in the Oradea region who previously waited two to three days for pathology results is now receiving them in approximately 24 hours. That is not an incremental improvement in service delivery. It is a structural shift in what regional diagnostic care can look like. In the first five months of 2026, three KITE aircraft flew more than 13,795 kilometres. With Romanian summer ahead and the worst of the winter weather behind, those figures will grow significantly through the second half of the year.

Expansion: a national network.
The next phase of the programme targets eastern Romania. The planned network will transport specimens from regional collection points in the north, aggregating samples across multiple sites along defined corridors, through to laboratory facilities on the outskirts of Bucharest.
The fleet requirement for this phase is twenty KITE aircraft for long-range legs, supplemented by at least ten aircraft of a complementary type for shorter, higher-frequency routes.
This mixed-fleet architecture reflects a mature approach to network design: platform selection determined by route characteristics, with KITE and AXIOM deployed where long-range performance and regulatory manageability are the defining requirements.
“We’ll use the KITE where its strengths lie, in its long-range abilities, and then where there are shorter routes but higher demands, we’re using a different type. Getting the best out of both.”
The economics work with fifty aircraft, not five.
The primary constraint on faster expansion is not regulatory or operational. It is cost structure. Drone logistics becomes cost-competitive with ground transport at scale, and the threshold is significant. As Gladman states plainly: the economics work with fifty aircraft, not five. Reaching that scale requires sustained volume, route density, and the operational discipline to drive cost per kilometre down over time. Three factors determine whether a drone network reaches that threshold: fleet size, utilisation, and the ratio of aircraft to operators.
Conventional drone operations scale headcount in proportion to aircraft. AXIOM is built to break that relationship. As the fleet grows from three aircraft to twenty to fifty, operational overhead does not grow at the same rate. That compression of cost per aircraft, at scale, is where the economics of drone logistics become not just competitive with ground transport, but structurally superior to it.
